Marquesas Islands

Nuku Hiva

One of the sea's biggest writers, Herman Melville, once said about Nuku Hiva: "There wouldn't be description able to sketch her beauty". Nuku Hiva is an abrupt island, pierced by several bays that and by deep canyons that go deep into its jungles. Here we can find the Hakui waterfall, the third highest on Earth, whose waters evaporate mainly in the fall before reaching the ground below.

Nuku Hiva is the capital of the Marquesas Islands, also the biggest island (and second biggest in Frenck Polynesia) and most populated in the archipelago. Its villages are located along the valleys in the eastern part of the island. The western part is drier, and almost uninhabited. Nuku Hiva has only a few paved roads that communicate its villages on one side and the airport on the other side.

This means that transportation within the island is difficult and its inhabitants live in a somewhat isolated fashion. Nuku Hiva, as well as many of its sister islands in the Marquesas, is a land full of mystery and altogether one of the most remote places on Earth. Here, ancient Polynesian traditions thrive and the western lifestyle has barely touched its habits, where locals live almost the same way they did before the Europeans' arrival two centuries ago.

It's in Taiohae, Nuku Hiva's main village, where the only hotel is located. It's a small property set amidst the jungle mountains, which grants the perfect scenery to represent the best of the Marquesas.
