Society Islands

Tetiaroa

Tetiaroa is a coral atoll, unlike Tahiti and Moorea, its closest neighbours. It is, in fact, the only atoll in the Society Islands. This gives Tetiaroa a very special landscape and ecosystem, as it doesn't feature a mountainous island in the middle of the lagoon, which is the case in every other island in the archipelago.

Due to it being a closed atoll (without any natural pass to the ocean), it is not accesible by boat. It is also a natural reserve with many species of endemic flora and fauna. It is particularly famous for the number of marine bird species that live there, as well as its turquoise waters.

Historically, Tetiaroa was a private residence to the ancient dynasties that ruled Tahiti before the Europeans' arrival. When Marlon Brando traveled to Polynesia in the 60's to shoot the "Mutiny of the Bounty" film, he fell in love with a local woman who he married, and with whom he had two children. It's then that he "rented" the island of Tetiaroa for 99 years (the maximum allowed by law), and after his passing away, the island was legated to his family.

Tetiaroa doesn't have any villages or local stable population, which makes its secluded and inmaculate island reputation even bigger. In 2014, The Brando hotel opened un Tetiaroa, built under license by the Brando family. This hotel marks an international standard in terms of sustainability, and it's the only existing structure in the island (and its staff the only population), as well as one of the most exclusive and luxurious hotels in the world, accesible only by private plane.

Diving

During the dives, you will encounter many colorful fish in their coral habitat (triggerfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish…). You will also see big animals that frequent the external slope of the reef: white tip sharks, grey sharks, spotted eagle rays, turtles, dogtooth ...
